Database Architect

Job Purpose

We are seeking a Database Architect to design and govern the enterprise data model and database architecture underpinning our data lake and feature stores. You will also build, monitor, and continuously optimise data pipelines and ETL infrastructure to ensure performance, scalability, and reliability.

This role combines deep expertise in data modelling with hands-on experience in MySQL-based systems, stored procedures, and data workflow optimisation. You will define canonical data structures that power reporting and modelling platforms, proactively identify performance bottlenecks, and deliver scalable solutions that support business growth.

You will play a critical role in enabling data-driven decision-making by ensuring data quality, integrity, and accessibility, while maintaining comprehensive documentation and supporting the evolution of our data architecture as the business scales.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Own the design and specification of enterprise data models (conceptual, logical, and physical)
• Define and enforce data modelling standards, naming conventions, and governance policies
• Design and maintain data lake architecture, including raw, curated, and consumption layers
• Architect data structures that support feature stores for reporting, analytics, and machine learning
• Design, build, and maintain ETL pipelines and data workflows
• Monitor production data pipelines, identifying and resolving performance issues proactively
• Refactor and optimise stored procedures, database queries, and ETL processes
• Write and maintain complex SQL queries and stored procedures
• Ensure data quality, consistency, and integrity across all pipelines and transformations
• Implement indexing strategies, partitioning, and schema optimisations for performance and scalability
• Document data models, pipelines, transformations, and data lineage
• Collaborate with analytics, data science, and product teams to translate business requirements
• Plan and deliver improvements to support increasing data volumes and complexity
• Stay up to date with emerging data technologies, tools, and best practices

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes

Essential

• Proven experience developing and optimising complex SQL queries and stored procedures at scale
• Strong experience designing, building, and maintaining ETL pipelines and data workflows
• Experience profiling, refactoring, and optimising data pipelines and database performance
• Strong understanding of data quality, consistency, and integrity across pipelines
• Expertise in conceptual, logical, and physical data modelling (including dimensional modelling and entity relationships)
• Experience designing and governing data lake architectures
• Understanding of feature store concepts and data models for batch and real-time processing

Desirable

• Experience with data integration tools or additional database systems
• Experience with data pipeline monitoring, observability, and alerting
• Experience with scripting or programming for data engineering (e.g., Python, Bash)
• Familiarity with data modelling tools (e.g., ERwin, ER/Studio, dbt) and metadata/catalogue management
