Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Reed Boardall is one of the UK’s foremost temperature-controlled food distribution businesses.
Based in Boroughbridge, Yorkshire, it stores and transports frozen products from manufacturers all around Europe to leading British supermarkets with its 180-strong vehicle fleet.

With around 350 drivers on its roster, Reed Boardall needed to be able to give them each a smartphone when out on the road that, as well as allowing them to make calls en route, would securely support a limited number of specific apps and allow very restricted internet usage. These apps enable drivers to complete legally required vehicle and trailer checks or allow them to see nearby HGV refuelling stops that accept the company’s preferred payment solutions, while limited data allows them to download traffic updates.

When it moved from basic mobiles with fixed-dial SIMs to smartphones in January 2019, it switched to plan.com, who provided a package with unlimited local and national calls and texts as well as a suitable data bundle which is perfect for its needs.

Using the plan.com platform, we can provide a very controlled smartphone service so that our drivers can do everything they need to do, without incurring any unwanted usage and costs.

Since office workers may need to ring depots that often have premium-rate numbers, we can unlock individual phones to de-restrict usage, adding on additional call spend monthly as we go along as necessary. That’s a really important tool."
